Local Businesses are Adjusting to the Minimum Wage Increase

Local businesses are making adjustments to accommodate the recent minimum wage increase.

On January 1st the province increased minimum wage from $11.60 to $14 an hour. Timmins Pita Pit Owner Erika Johnson says this has been hard on the business.

Johnson says the company has also raised food prices to compensate for the increased wage pay.

New Business Owner Terry McGaghran says he has also had to raise prices and cut hours. The Holy Cow owner says he wasn’t even done his hiring process before he had to start cutting hours.

McGaghran says the wage increase would have been better if it was more gradual.

The Timmins Chamber of Commerce says it will be doing a survey with local businesses at the end of the month on the increase. The chamber says this information will be taken to the province.
