Food Banks are reaping the benefits from this year’s Summer Concert Series.
Tourism Timmins hosted weekly concerts this summer in Schumacher and Porcupine to give local and regional bands a place to perform, as well as collect donations for both the Timmins and South Porcupine Food Banks heading into the fall season. This year the events raised about 2,000 pounds of food.
South Porcupine Food Bank representative Ronnie Moisan says donations typically slow down in the summer, so this is definitely going to help stock the shelves. “We are getting more and more people coming in with demands for food and it’s getting hard on us keeping a good stock in on our shelves. This is going to help us a lot.” Moisan says this time of year the organization is seeing more families coming in because it’s back to school time. “We are up to 20-30 families every shift, and we are open three shifts a week.” He says these families depend on this supply of food. Moisan adds that people forget that food banks need donations all year round, not just around holidays.
Tourism Timmins says it’s great to see the community band together like this and it is already planning next year’s event.
