OPP Launches a Fall Seat Belt Campaign

Buckle up every time you get into your car.

The OPP is running a Fall Seat Belt Campaign this week to educate you on the laws and safety features on a seatbelt. Constable Michelle Simard says if you are caught not wearing a seatbelt, you can face fines up to $240 and two demerit points. Simard says the demerit points stay on your driving record for two years. She adds that it’s not just the driver that can face fines. “Whether you’re a passenger or a driver, but people can be charged. If they are under 16-years-old, the driver can be charged for not having his passengers buckled up.”

Simard says seat belts save lives, so you should wear one at all times. “Personally I was involved in a collision and the seatbelt saved my life.” She says she is a full believer that if you put it on, it will save your life in a collision. “It only takes two seconds to buckle up.”

Officers will be running seat belt spot checks throughout the region until October 5th.
