The Bank of Canada has put out an official call for ideas of which Canadian to honour on a new $5.00 bill.
Timmins Coin Club member Orest Lawryniw collects and sells currency. He likes the idea of honouring Canadians of the past, the way the new $10.00 bill depicts Viola Desmond.
“We’ve had Prime Ministers and the Queen and so on,” he remarks, “but I think there are numerous other Canadians that should be recognized for their efforts.”
Lawryniw says the first person who came to mind is the early odds-on favourite on social media: the man synonymous with the Marathon of Hope.
“I think that they should recognize Terry Fox, because he was not only a great Canadian that brought a real important cause forward to the general public, but he had an influence completely around the world, not just in Canada.”

The bill will be vertical, so Lawryniw says that’s ideal for the iconic shot of Terry Fox running along the highway.
Nominations are being accepted on the Bank of Canada website until March 11th.
