Property owners at Barber’s Bay are being given until the end of next month to get camper trailers off their lots.
Due to complaints from their neighbours, the City of Timmins is enforcing a ten-year-old section of the zoning bylaw, says city clerk Steph Palmateer. It limits the number of dwellings to one.
“The issue arises when you bring an RV camper trailer and have people staying in it, it becomes considered a second dwelling unit under the bylaw,” he notes from the bylaw.
Enforcement will also begin soon at other lake areas of the city.
There is a loophole that allows short-term visitors. By the time the city could take enforcement action, they would likely be gone.
Palmateer adds that property owners who are also trailer owners can keep them in their yards.
“You’re definitely permitted to store a trailer, but it would have to be stored in a fashion where it’s obvious that it’s not being used for habitation.”
The city councillor whose ward includes Barber’s Bay, John Curley, won’t comment, now that the bylaw is being enforced, and because he has relatives living there.
