Delayed deconsecration: Service at St. Paul’s Anglican Church goes this Saturday

UPDATE, THURS., AUG. 19: Very Rev. Isaac now says the service is delayed until the following Saturday, August 28th, “for personal reasons”.

The deconsecration of St. Paul’s Anglican Church in South Porcupine is going ahead this Saturday evening.  It was delayed from January by COVID-19.

The Very Rev. Valerie Isaac, rector at St. Paul’s, says the service begins at 6:00pm with a regular eucharistic service.  That’s followed by Archbishop Anne Germond deconsecrating the various points of the church.

“Then the last thing,” Rev. Isaac explains, “is we gather outside and she does the final deconsecration of the building and it will no longer be a church.”

COVID-19 is still playing a role.  Rev. Isaac says anyone wanting to attend the service must contact her directly ahead of time, due to the indoor gathering limit.

“Because I have a list of members of St. Paul’s congregation who wish to be here and then there are clergy coming from around the diocese as well.”

St. Paul’s has been in service for 109 years.  The congregation has been worshipping via Zoom for the past year-and-a-half.  Rev. Isaac says the members will start worshipping at St. Matthew’s Cathedral in Timmins the first weekend of September.
