The South Porcupine Food Bank has put a $10,000 grant from the provincial government’s Northern Ontario Heritage Fund towards buying two commercial freezers.
Food bank treasurer Andrew Persad says after the fire in its former location in June 2021, the residential freezers it bought kept failing.
“The residential freezers breathe at the back of the freezer,” Persaid explains. “Because of the space, they can’t be kind of jammed against the wall for the most part, because we need space for people to move.”
The commercial freezers are also larger.
Persad points out that there’s more than non-perishable food available at the food bank.
“We do buy some perishable items: vegetables, and we do get some meats on special when we do get it. It also helps with the food recovery side of things.”
“Food recovery” means items close to their best-before dates that are donated by Food Basics in South Porcupine and No Frills in Timmins.
