SHST stops offering supervised consumption

A mere three days before its official second anniversary, the supervised drug injection site on Cedar Street North will stop offering that service as of Monday.

Safe Health Site Timmins opened on July 4th, 2022.  Operation was recently assumed by the Canadian Mental Health Association.  It says that hoped-for provincial funding hasn’t come through, so the service will end.

The site will remain open from 10:00am until 6:00pm every day of the week, offering a list of supports for drug users.

When SHST opened, Timmins was registering 80.2 deaths per one-hundred-thousand people from what the mental health association calls “opioid-related deaths”.  That number is now below 60.  CMHA credits that to services like supervised consumption.
