Horizon Timmins Palliative Care Service is marking its 40th anniversary.
The non-profit group offers support to people at end of life and their families.
Board member Chantal Moreau is also an accompaniment volunteer. That’s someone who will sit with a client and help them through their final journey without being alone.
The service is offered 24/7 and the volunteer will go to the client.
“So if the client’s in hospice, we’ll go there,” says Moreau. “If they’re at the Extendicare, we will go there. If they’re at home, we will go there. We are bilingual as well.”
Moreau says it began as the French Catholic-led “Albatross” in 1984. In 1993, it became Horizon Timmins Palliative Care.
“And it’s become incorporated and non-denominational. So it doesn’t matter what religion or creed a person is, we will attend to them as well.”
