How and when to wear a poppy

There’s a right way to wear a poppy, leading up to Remembrance Day next Monday.

Legion Tiimmins Branch 88 sergeant-at-arms Andréa Villeneuve says to pin it on your coat, as close to your heart as possible, from the last Friday in October until the end of Remembrance Day.

A great way to dispose it is to leave it on a wreath at the Cenotaph at the end of the ceremony.

“I love to see that,” Villeneuve comments. “Of course, I miss it most of the time because I’m on parade. When I go back, I see all these poppies on there and I think that’s one of the best ways to dispose of it for sure.“

She doesn’t outwardly condone wearing it on a hat, but if it’s on the left side, she’s okay with it.

“A lot of people, if they have like a leather jacket, they don’t want to put a hole in their coat. I do understand that,” Villeneuve says. “I mean, the proper protocol is over your heart, but if they put it on the left side, that’s wonderful.”

The money raised by poppy sales stays in the community for needs associated with military vets.
