The Deputy Grand Chief of the Mushkegowuk Council is expressing concerns about the site for a transitional housing community in Timmins.
Natasha Martin has written to Mayor Michelle Boileau. As she points out, more than half of the city’s homeless people are Indigenous. Her concerns start with the location down Pine St. S., inaccessible to the target population. It is also about no sidewalks, putting residents at risk, and the potential risk from the proximity of the landfill site, its odours and contaminants.
The Deputy Grand Chief also tells the mayor the location should not be based on a public opinion survey, rather developing the best location and model. She offers to work with the city to achieve that.
