Grant Helps Ski Hill Operations

The Timmins ski season will be longer this year thanks to a grant from Glencore’s Kidd Operations.

The nonprofit Kamiskotia Snow Resort is reaping the benefits from an $8,000 grant from the mining company including a longer season, extended seasonal workers and lower energy costs. General Manager Eric Philipow says the money was used to buy two new high energy-efficient snow-making guns which he says was crucial for opening this winter.

Philipow says not only did this allowed the ski hill to open on their earliest date in 10 years on December 9th, but also save 15 per cent of their energy costs by reducing the number of air compressors needed to make snow.

He adds that having a man-made snow base should extend the local ski season further into the spring because the it’s denser and takes longer to melt than natural snow.
