The streets will be filled with orange on Friday.
The Timmins Native Friendship Centre is hosting its annual orange shirt day march in honour of those who went through the residential school system. The centre says participants will be honouring the experience and healing journey of the survivors and their families, and commitment to reconciliation.
The centre encourages you to wear orange in support of the day. The orange shirt day was inspired by Phyllis Webstad, whose orange sweater was taken away from her by an instructor on her first day St. Joseph Mission residential school in Williams Lake BC. The friendship centre says Webstad was 6-years-old at the time and the sweater was given to her by her grandmother.
The march will start at 10:30am at the centre on Kirby Avenue. The friendship centre will be serving bannock and tea afterwards.
