It’s time to collect new sock for Socktober.
As we start heading into colder months, Socks Timmins is starting its annual Socktober sock drive for the community. Organizer Carol Halt says the organization is collecting as many pairs of socks as possible to donate to local homeless organizations. “Socks are the most needed and least donated item in shelters. We feel that it’s very important to keep the supply of socks year round provided to our different groups, agencies and shelters who help those who are in need. ”
Halt says socks are also some of the most important clothing articles because they keep your feet warm. She says unfortunately, they tend to wear down pretty fast. “If you could imagine having a pair or two of socks and wearing then 24 hours a day in all weather, perhaps not with the most adequate other footwear over top of those socks, they would wear down pretty quickly.” She adds, “when we think about our drawers at home and how many pairs of socks we may have, then you look at some of the people who are not as fortunate as we are and only have one or two pairs only, it’s really important that we collect large amounts of socks over the year to ensure that they have a good supply.”
She says all the new pairs of socks that are collected are given to places like Living Space, Project Love and the Yo Mobile. Halt says this year she hopes to collect 7,500 pairs of new socks to give to the local homeless population. She says since 2015, Socks Timmins has warmed people’s feet with 20,000 pairs of socks collected.
Halt says anyone looking to make a donation can contact her on the Socks Timmins Facebook page.
