Sometime this month, you’ll see construction activity around the Golden Manor Home for the Aged. Timmins council has voted unanimously to go ahead with a new, larger facility on the same property.
With the project cost escalating and a gun to the city’s head to qualify for provincial funding… administration took another look at the redevelopment plan, along with its consultant and contractor. And council heard an impassioned plea Tuesday night from the Manor residents’ family council to go ahead.
The re-examination managed to trim costs somewhat… but it still comes in at about $110-million.
The brainstorming also devised different ways of financing it… while the city continues to advocate with the province to cough up more money. In the meantime will be a one-percent tax increase in each of the next three years.
Construction is expected to last until spring, 2026.
