Renovations on way to Hearst Notre Dame Hospital surgical department

Two major donors are helping the Notre Dame Hospital in Hearst proceed with $1million worth of renovations to improve its surgical department.

Hospital foundation director Francine Laberge says renovations will get underway early this summer and be completed in a matter of a few months.

“Surgical theatre which comprises of two operating rooms which are really outdated,” she said. “They basically date back when the hospital first opened and built in 1972.”

Laberge says research was completed two years go including a med glass system that can withstand a category five earthquake.

She adds the walls are already pre-cut to make it easy to install. Other enhancements include a video conferencing centre so doctors can get assistance if needed.

Laberge says it will help not only with recruitment but with keep patients close to home.

“Travelling time I mean if we can serve our patients here in Hearst as much as possible,” she noted. “We don’t have to be travelling five six hours to go to Timmins, Thunder Bay, or Sudbury for surgery if it can be done here locally.”
