OPP say caution needed when taking winter ice road to James Bay Coast

A more snowier winter in the north is helping to keep the winter ice road open that connects the James Bay Coast to the Highway 11 corridor.

OPP Constable Kyler Brouwer says Moose Cree First Nation has recommended that an all-wheel or four wheel drive vehicles be used and to travel the speed limit at 50 km/h.

“That is part of the James Bay patrol area, and we do conduct patrols on the ice road whether its local James Bay OPP officers and then sometimes we have some of our traffic team,” he said.

Brouwer says if you are going to use the road then make sure you plan ahead.

“To travel in pairs,” he said. “It’s good to tell somebody where you are because there is no cell service along that road so if someone knows when you are expected to get off of Wetum Road whether on the north side or the southside that could help out a lot.”

The winter ice road can be accessed via Highway 634 in Smooth Rock Falls to Fraserdale and then on to Otter Rapids.
