Adopt-A-Block returns this year in Timmins

Two days are set aside as the focus of this year’s Adopt-A-Block community cleanup in Timmins, but the city will support you anytime during the summer.

Community programs manager Meagan Baranyk says on May 23rd and 24th, individuals and groups can choose a block or area and the city will provide gloves and garbage bags. You can sign up beginning next week.

“This will be posted on the city of Timmins website on May 1st,“ she points out, “and it’ll also be advertised through Facebook as well.”

More than 130 areas were cleaned up last year. Baranyk hopes there’s even more of that community pride this year.

There will be designated locations to drop off the garbage you collect and if you do a bigger cleanup, dump fees can be waived.

Baranyk acknowledges the belief of some people that this isn’t something residents should have to do.

“But I don’t think it’s something that one department or the city could do alone or should do alone. I want to emphasize that collective ownership. Residents need to step in, they need to care for their neighbourhood.”
